The Story of Longquan Sword

2 minutes, 45 seconds Read

The Longquan Sword, also known as the Seven Star Sword, can be divided into three basic types based on its different performance: hard sword (known for its rigidity), soft sword (known for its flexibility), and traditional martial arts sword. In addition, there are 29 varieties, including Cloud Flower Sword, Wand Sword, Fish Intestine Sword, Mandarin Duck Sword, and nearly a hundred styles.
In the long-term development, through the continuous pursuit of excellence by generations of craftsmen, Longquan Sword has formed four traditional characteristics in product quality: toughness and sharpness, balance of hardness and softness, striking cold light, and exquisite decoration.

Firstly, it is tough and sharp; Cut copper like mud. In 1978, the craftsmen of Longquan Sword performed in public at two national gatherings in the Chinese arts and crafts industry. He effortlessly split the six stacked copper plates into two pieces with a Longquan sword, without curling the blade.

Secondly, balance strength and flexibility. The ancient Longquan sword was cast with pig iron, and later with medium carbon steel. In addition, the quenching process was just right, giving medium carbon steel the characteristics of spring steel. If a thin sword is rolled into a circle and tied around the waist, it looks like a belt tied to a skirt. After being untied, the sword stood straight as before.

Thirdly, the cold light is overwhelming. There is a type of grinding stone called “Liangshi” in Longquan. The sword sharpened on this kind of stone shines with a cold light. The Longquan Sword relies entirely on manual polishing, from rough grinding, fine grinding to fine grinding, which often takes several days or even months. Once polished, it will shine brightly.

Fourthly, the decoration is exquisite. The sword is engraved with a seven star emblem and a flying dragon pattern. Engraving flowers on the sword body is also a unique skill of Longquan Sword. Swordsmen do not use colored pens, nor do they follow the pattern. They only use a steel chisel to carve on the body of the sword that is not wide enough. After carving, they pour copper water on it, and after leveling and grinding, the flying dragon pattern is vivid and natural, never disappearing. Longquan Treasure Sword is known for its four major characteristics. Its selection of materials is meticulous, with the saying “three pounds of hairy iron and half pounds of steel”. The forging temperature is well controlled, the ingredients are uniform, and the patterns are fresh; The quenching method is also very unique, and grinding is very particular.

The forging technique of Longquan Sword contains rich cultural connotations and holds an important position in the history of Chinese weapons, metallurgy, and art. Longquan Sword is not only a fitness martial arts equipment and stage props for movies and TV shows, but also a national gift given to foreign guests, cherished by people at home and abroad as well as swordsmanship enthusiasts. In ancient times, most Longquan swords had no scabbard. Later, the scabbard and hilt were made from local specialty rosewood. This type of rosewood has a tough texture, beautiful texture, and an antique fragrance. Decorated with silver and copper, it further enhances the Longquan Sword.

International Olympic Committee President Bach, who participated in the opening ceremony of the 19th Asian Games, received a gift from China – the Longquan Sword.
